Description

 

Under supervision to operate materials handling equipment and performs manual tasks in the receipt, storage, and delivery of a variety of materials in a departmental supply unit, storeroom, or warehouse.


This recruitment is to establish an eligible list for permanent and extra help positions.

Some departments require selected candidates to successfully pass an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

Please note: Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take the written examination tentatively scheduled for the week of November 11, 2024.

 

Typical Tasks

 

The following is a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in this classification and is not intended to reflect all duties performed by every incumbent in this classification:

  • Loads and unloads stock from delivery vehicles;
  • Unpacks, stores, and rearranges supplies and other items;
  • Operates forklifts and other materials-handling equipment;
  • Checks incoming orders for accurate quantity and specifications;
  • Marks and tags items for ease of retrieval and identification;
  • Prepares orders for issuance or delivery;
  • Posts items issued or received, and may assist higher level staff in inventory of supplies;
  • Performs necessary duties in keeping storage facilities and adjoining yard areas in a clean and orderly condition;
  • May drive automotive vehicles when delivering materials to County departments;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

 

Employment Standards

 

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

 


Training and Experience Note
: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through completion of the eighth grade;

 

and

 

Six (6) months of experience in a warehouse or distribution environment.

 


Special Requirements

  • Some positions may require forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.

 


Knowledge of:

  • Forklifts and other machinery used in the movement of heavy equipment;
  • Procedures used in the receipt, tagging, and organization of materials and goods;
  • Stock control systems, both manual and computerized;
  • Basic record keeping;
  • Basic mathematical calculations;
  • Safe lifting, carrying, moving, and general safety precautions used to move materials and supplies;
  • Common computer systems and applications.

 


Ability to:

  • Exercise physical exertion in the movement of moderately heavy or bulky supplies or equipment;
  • Organize work area and complete tasks promptly and accurately;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, other agencies and the public;
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Push, pull, lift, bend, carry, stoop, and crouch in the course of work.
