We are currently recruiting for a Senior / Principal Transport Planner to join our Transportation business in the Republic of Ireland.
This is a hybrid role with the location being flexible. Your focus will be on ensuring technical excellence within our expanding portfolio of transport modelling and appraisal projects.
About The Transport Infrastructure Business
Designing and delivering transport systems requires careful consideration of many issues – from the impact on local ecosystems and land uses, to preferred models of funding and the unique needs of communities and customers. We provide technical and advisory services across the entire project lifecycle. We’re proud to have worked on many of the most successful transport projects in Ireland and the UK, including roads and motorways, light and heavy rail, ports and airport upgrades, and sustainable transport projects including greenways and active travel.
Our transport planning and appraisal team supports the wider business providing modelling, undertaking appraisal and developing business cases. Reflecting the wider Transport Infrastructure work we cover not only road transport but increasingly rail and walking/cycling provision.
About The Role

You will also be instrumental in developing junior colleagues and supporting managers in project management, business development, and shaping the future direction of the transport planning and appraisal team.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Lead for Transport Planning and Appraisal, you will take responsibility for tasks and small projects whilst receiving support for your own development
- Scope and undertake modelling and appraisal tasks within wider projects, ensuring that budgets and deadlines are met
- Lead and develop junior team members as tasks require
- Prepare and present reports related to modelling, appraisal and transport business cases
- Support managers with business development activities
About You
- Level 8 degree in a subject relevant to transport modelling and appraisal (including but not limited to Civil Engineering, Planning, Physics, Economics, Mathematics, Geography).
- A postgraduate (Level 9) Masters’ Degree in a relevant subject (such as Transport Planning, Operational Research, Statistics) would be advantageous.
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional body would be advantageous.
- Relevant experience in the area of transport modelling and transport appraisal. In particular, candidates should be able to scope, deliver and report on transport modelling tasks largely independently.
- An understanding of commercial expectations – able to deliver to deadlines and budget constraints.
- Experience training and developing junior staff.
- Able to deliver reporting – whether technical or non-technical – to a high standard, meeting our clients’ expectations.
- Willingness to travel to meet clients, for site visits, and if not based in the team’s main office in Cork, Ireland, to visit on an occasional basis.
Key Skills/Attributes
Knowledge and experience of transport modelling and economic appraisal for the UK and/or Irish markets, including at least some of the following:
- Strategic modelling (SATURN and/or Visum)
- Microsimulation modelling (Vissim)
- Public transport/multi-modal modelling
- Appraisal tools (TUBA, COBALT)
- Junction modelling
- GIS in the context of transport planning
- Application of relevant appraisal guidance (TAG and/or PAG)
- Writing or contributing to transport business cases (UK Treasury Guidance/Irish TAF)
Complementary IT skills in the context of transport modelling would be advantageous, such as:
- GIS
- Advanced Excel/VBA
- Databases
- Python/R
- Visualisation tools
- AI tools
