Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Ensure that patients receive compassionate and personalized care, always maintaining confidentiality, dignity, and privacy.
  • Fertility Expertise: Provide high-quality support for patients undergoing fertility treatments, including performing phlebotomy, administering medication, and assisting with various clinical procedures (e.g., ultrasounds, embryo transfers, and egg collections).
  • Consultations & Teaching: Lead patient consultations, guiding patients through their treatment plans and offering support in injection teaching sessions. Ensure informed consent is given, and update relevant checklists on the IDEAS system.
  • Clinical Procedures: Support in invasive procedures using aseptic techniques, decontaminate equipment, and ensure clinical areas remain clean and safe.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Monitor patients’ progress and report any abnormal results to the medical team. Ensure timely follow-up on results, managing treatment schedules and ensuring patients are well-informed at each stage of their care.
  • Medication & Care Plans: Advise patients on medication regimens, manage stock of medications, and ensure medications are safely administered according to protocols.
  • Emergency Care: Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations, providing effective care and using your training in basic life support when necessary.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities

  • Stock & Inventory Management: Ensure clinical areas are well-stocked, manage stock rotations, and report any needs for additional supplies to the Nurse Manager.
  • Quality Management: Perform daily quality checks in clinical areas, ensuring emergency equipment is ready for use and documenting any incidents or issues.
  • Collaboration: Work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, liaising with external partners (e.g., Andrology Solutions, Reprogenetics Oxford) and managing patient care across satellite clinics and with homecare medication suppliers.
  • Professional Development: Lead by example and mentor junior staff, providing training and support to ensure the highest standards of care.
  • Administrative Tasks: Manage the IDEAS system, review orders, return patient calls promptly, and ensure communication is clear between departments.
  • Policy Development: Play an active role in developing, evaluating, and auditing protocols, guidelines, and policies to enhance patient care and team efficiency.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance to both qualified and unqualified staff, ensuring continuous professional development and support.
  • Act as a role model for professional behaviour and clinical expertise.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of cost-effective practices within the department.
  • Report and document any incidents or accidents involving patients, visitors, or staff.

Essentials

Person Specification:

  • Valid NMC registration as a Registered General Nurse.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in fertility nursing or a related field.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advanced clinical skills, including experience in phlebotomy, patient consultations, and assisting with invasive procedures.
  • Ability to make independent, informed decisions and provide guidance to junior staff.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with an ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of care and confidentiality.

Desirable

  • Experience working in fertility, women’s health, or reproductive medicine.
  • Knowledge of the IDEAS patient portal and familiarity with HFEA regulations.
  • A keen interest in leadership, training, and mentoring junior staff.
