Under general supervision, prepares patients for and performs Radiologic examinations.

  • Maintains a safe working environment: Keeps work area clean and free of hazards. Alerts appropriate resource of faulty or broken equipment. Observes all safety guidelines. Recognizes and reports unsafe acts
  • Maintains appropriate quantities of medical stock for the department.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice. This includes maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.
  • Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.
  • Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good handwashing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleaning equipment between patients.
  • Assists student technologists who may rotate through the department.
  • Transports and moves patients using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices.
  • Follows Universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to working with a patient. Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when bringing patients to and from the department.
  • Provides patient and family with information/instructions regarding procedure, evaluating barriers to understanding.
  • Evaluates patients medical histories and clinical data.
  • Completes the necessary paperwork and notes discrepancies according to departmental procedure.
  • Determines need for translation services or communication aides and arranges for the appropriate resources to meet these needs.

Department Specific Competencies

  • Operates all x-ray equipment and systems.
  • Calibrates and maintains equipment for quality control.
  • Selects exposure factors, positions and consistently produces radiographic images of diagnostic quality.
  • Performs portable procedures in high stress environments includes Intensive Care Units, Surgery Suite and Emergency Room.
  • Administers contrast as needed per exam.
  • Instructs and prepares patients for radiographic/ Fluoroscopic examinations and assists Radiologist during procedures.
  • Follows universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to performing the exam, using pre-op/pre procedure verification check list, site marked with the physician’s initials (physician performing procedure) and using “Time Out”.
  • Practices aseptic technique in opening sterile drape packs, catheters, equipment and supplies.
  • Assists the Radiologist with the consenting of patient.
  • Corrects supplies are charged and tech notes are written at the completion of each exam in RIS.
  • Collects specimens, properly labeling and transporting to laboratory.
  • Assumes on-call status and call back as assigned, responding within 30 minutes of receiving call.
  • Works cooperatively with all members of the department to resolve problems expediently.
  • Follows Lean principles and creates SOPs for the Department as needed.
  • Orients and trains new employees and students. Assists in training and development of existing employees.

Additional InformationGraduate from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology.
