Position Overview
The Medical Coding and Billing Assistant 1, under the supervision of Yale Medicine Administration (YMA) Coding and Billing, is responsible for reviewing charge submissions for patient clinical services. This includes ensuring compliance with coding, documentation review, quality assurance, and adherence to regulatory guidelines. The assistant will handle charge submissions, maintain productivity to meet deadlines, and may assist with verifying accurate documentation and coding.
Key Responsibilities

Review and resolve work queues for medical billing charge sessions by confirming ICD-10 (diagnostic) and CPT/HCPCS (procedural) codes and modifiers, ensuring all required information is included.

Verify that all claims meet payer, contract, and YMA guidelines, ensuring compliance with Teaching Physician guidelines.

Communicate with providers to resolve documentation issues and ensure complete and accurate coding.

Participate in team training, maintain knowledge of best practices, and actively engage with the department to maintain a positive and productive team environment.

Required Qualifications
-
High school diploma and four years of related work experience, including two years at a lower level in the same job family, or an Associate’s degree with two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of experience and education.

General/intermediate knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCs, modifiers, medical terminology, and digital coding resources.

Proficiency with electronic health record systems, data entry, and web-based applications.

Strong knowledge of Federal payer regulations, third-party payers, HIPAA rules, and reimbursement policies.

Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with team members and providers.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience in an academic medical environment or multi-specialty practice.

CPC certification is preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
-
Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) from AAPC, with the requirement to achieve full CPC certification within two years.
Physical Requirements

Ability to push, pull, and lift more than 20 pounds and travel around the campus.
