Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for MDs, APRNs, or PAs across Health and Wellness sites.
  • Confirm patient information by interviewing them, recording medical history, reviewing medications, and completing screening tools. Document all details in the medical record.
  • Measure and record patients’ vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Maintain organized systems to ensure smooth and timely patient flow.
  • Perform phlebotomy and prepare lab specimens as needed.
  • Provide medical support under the supervision of an APRN or RN.
  • Deliver patient instructions as directed by MDs or APRNs.
  • Ensure all relevant reports, lab results, and documents are available in patients’ medical records before appointments.
  • Track referral statuses, ensuring they are sent and received promptly.
  • Manage inventory by monitoring supplies, placing orders, and verifying deliveries.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by cross-training across health centers, clinical programs, and service lines, including covering other Health and Wellness sites as needed.
  • Maintain medical equipment by following operational guidelines, troubleshooting issues, conducting preventive maintenance, and arranging repairs.
  • Handle phone messages and provide responses to patients, MDs, APRNs, PAs, and pharmacies.
  • Triage and forward messages from patients and front office staff to the appropriate medical professionals.
  • Maintain logs and perform required checks (e.g., refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen levels, cold sterilization fluid changes).
  • Enhance the practice’s reputation by embracing new challenges, taking initiative, and contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Pass a respirator fit test upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Continuously expand cultural awareness and competency by understanding the history, traditions, values, and family systems of the groups served, and by using appropriate approaches, skills, and techniques.
  • Follow strict infection control protocols to maintain a clean and safe environment using approved disinfectants after each patient visit and on all equipment as needed.
  • Ensure the availability of hand hygiene supplies and personal protective equipment throughout the health and wellness center.

Regulatory and Corporate Compliance Responsibilities:

  • Comply with Wheeler Clinic’s standards as outlined in the Corporate Compliance Plan, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Stay informed of all relevant federal, state, and clinic regulations, laws, and policies, including updates and modifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

About the Role:

The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in Wheeler’s integrated primary care system, focused on prevention and health maintenance in an ambulatory setting. This position supports clinical staff, ensures a well-maintained clinic environment, and provides essential patient services. Medical Assistants may also work as part of the Mobile Medical Team, delivering services through Wheeler’s Mobile Medical Units.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Hourly Rate: $20.50 for one year of experience; $22.00 for two or more years of experience.
  • Bilingual Spanish-speaking stipend: $2,288 annually.
  • Scrubs/uniform allowance: $100.

Education and Experience/Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a medical assistant program is preferred, or certification as a CNA, EMT, PCA, or PCT.
  • At least one (1) year of relevant experience is preferred.
