Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the foreman, this role is responsible for performing repairs and maintenance at a semi-skilled level across multiple trade areas.

Essential Functions

In alignment with the University of Denver’s policies and procedures, primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing work in three or more trade areas such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and painting.
  • Installing and/or replacing:
    • Ceiling tiles, suspended ceilings, floor tiles, ceramic tiles, steel studs, drywall, plastic laminate, screens, drapery rods, and shelving.
    • Door hardware, brickwork, concrete, pumps, motors, filters, electrical switches, receptacles, and ballasts.
    • Painting and patching surfaces as needed.
  • Operating power tools including power saws, sanders, drill presses, and other necessary equipment.
  • Assisting with emergency snow removal, which may require early morning shifts. Duties include clearing walkways, steps, ramps, and parking lots using power equipment or manual shoveling.
  • Providing guidance to lower-classification employees as well as permanent and temporary staff as needed.
  • Assisting licensed or certified tradespeople when required.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, and layouts for assigned tasks.
  • Transporting tools and equipment to job sites.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety data sheets, operating manuals, and work orders.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
  • Basic math skills for accurate measurements and material calculations.
  • Problem-solving abilities to assess and resolve challenges efficiently.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations related to workplace safety.
  • Proficiency in computer usage and software applications.
  • Ability to calculate dimensions, weights, areas, and board feet.
  • Comfortable working with blueprints, sketches, layouts, and drawn plans.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five years of experience in at least three of the following trade areas:
    • Carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, and electrical work.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License and ability to be insured under University guidelines.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical exam and lift up to 100 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software, such as WebTMA.

Working Environment

  • Regular exposure to:
    • Moving mechanical parts
    • Outdoor weather conditions, including wet, humid, hot, and cold temperatures
    • Electrical work, chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles
  • Occasional work at:
    • High elevations using extension ladders and scaffolding
    • Confined spaces
  • Noise levels can range from low to high, with moderate noise levels being most common.
  • The work environment involves frequent interruptions, leading to moderate to high stress levels.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required.
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, using hands for tools, reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crawling.
  • Pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying objects up to 100 lbs.
  • Visual acuity is required for close and distant work, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color recognition.
  • Must be capable of wearing OSHA-approved respirators when necessary.
