Job Summary:

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for accurate and efficient specimen handling, including collection, processing, and distribution of blood and other bodily fluids. This involves preparing specimens for testing and distributing samples. The Laboratory Assistant also provides patient and client services and performs clerical tasks.

Job-Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate patients before blood draws (considering diet and medications).
  • Follow established laboratory procedures for sample collection.
  • Properly identify patients/clients and label specimens.
  • Collect timed tests (fasting, glucose tolerance, therapeutic drug levels) according to protocols.
  • Obtain blood specimens via skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques.
  • Maintain specimen integrity for the intended tests, including using correct preservatives.
  • Provide post-collection patient care. Recognize and address patient issues related to venipuncture, seeking assistance when necessary.
  • Instruct patients and healthcare professionals on proper specimen collection, transport, and handling.
  • Centrifuge specimens and prepare aliquots or components according to test requirements.
  • Understand the correlation between proper specimen collection and accurate analysis. Adhere to test-specific handling techniques.
  • Consult with technologists and technicians regarding sample integrity and resolve specimen issues.
  • Perform computer tasks related to client services, order entry, and specimen distribution.
  • Prepare paperwork and samples for reference laboratories.
  • Perform clerical duties, including record-keeping, filing, and report delivery.
  • Provide client services, such as answering phones, assisting healthcare professionals and patients with lab-related questions, faxing reports, and providing verbal reports.
  • Collect samples from patients in various settings (provider offices, outpatient draw stations, emergency triage, surgery, and inpatient rooms).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist license. Individuals without this license have 6 months from their hire date to obtain it and must provide proof of completing an accredited phlebotomy program if they do not have an MA-P license.
  • Keyboarding skills are required.
