Job Summary
The Patient Advocates’ primary objective is to work with patients in conjunction with the Sales Force regarding benefits, insurance issues, self-pay arrangements, and patient balances to ensure compliance with payer and corporate policy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Patient Advocates handle all incoming calls to the Patient Advocacy Group
- Patient Advocates work as liaisons between the patient and the Sales Rep to ensure a resolution to the patient’s financial concerns.
- Patient Advocates will work with the Sales Rep when an account is not covered by Insurance and Sales Rep wants to have the patient qualify for self-pay or a reduced payment of any kind.
- Patient Advocates set up payment plans for both self-pay and patient balances as required.
- Patient Advocates obtain financial information from patients to determine if a balance reduction or write-off is warranted.
- Patient Advocates will ensure patient balances are current and refer any patients not up to date on their balances to a collection agency for follow up.
- Patient Advocates will handle all incoming credit card payments.
Expected Areas of Competence (i.e. KSAs)
- Knowledge or understanding of Commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other governmental and private insurance products.
- Medical terminology and health insurance background required.
- Understanding of health insurance concepts and benefits required.
- Excellent customer service skills, analytical problem-solving skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, professional telephone manner and well organized.
- Able to work with balancing team and individual responsibilities.
- Experience using Microsoft Office tools such as Word and Excel.
- Ability to learn and use proprietary programs such as FileNet, A/S 400, IFM.
Education/ Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 2-3 years of customer service and medical background experience.
- Spanish Speaking a Plus.
