TITLE: Decision Support Analyst
JOB OVERVIEW: The Decision Support Analyst role will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting complex data from various hospital departments, this professional identifies trends, patterns, and opportunities that will assist with strategic decision-making. This position will generate comprehensive reports, develop data visualizations, and provide actionable insights to support hospital operations, patient care, and financial planning.
DEPARTMENT: Decision Support
HOURS OF WORK: Typically, Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
REPORTS TO: Director of Budget and Financial Planning
Prerequisites:
Bachelor’s degree in a business or healthcare related field, required. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum 7 years experience in a healthcare environment with an emphasis in decision support analytics, required.
Demonstrated skill in strategic planning through data analysis and interpretation.
Exceptional decision support skills including data collection, financial analysis, big data analytics, and experience preparing and presenting management-level presentations.
Knowledge of hospital, practitioner, and non-hospital care services, and the coding and billing practices as they related to those services.
Advanced understanding of decision support systems and cost accounting methodologies.
Technical experience with systems applications including Microsoft Office suite of products.
SQL Experience, Preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills essential.
Experience in a broad spectrum of project development.
Qualifications:
Problem-solving leadership experience required.
Expert knowledge of health care and industry trends.
High degree of understanding a decision support application architecture.
Proven analytical skills to identify opportunities for financial and operational improvement through the analysis of large sets of data.
Knowledge of claims systems and payment methodologies; financial and clinical information systems.
Extensive experience working with various BI tools, Analytics software, and Data Warehousing environments (past experience with EPIC and Harris optimal).
Understanding of statistical theories, as well as cost accounting principles.
Experience working with large amounts of data and related databases.
Strong analytical skills to review data and troubleshoot to ensure data integrity.
Ability to work independently and in teams with good problem-solving skills, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to see the big picture while maintaining a detail-oriented mindset.
Demonstrated ability to work with computer systems and personal computers.
Sophisticated level of knowledge in hospital and physician costing.
Ability to design complex financial analysis using financial and patient data and industry benchmarks.
Advanced understanding of clinical terms; understanding of service lines within a hospital environment.
Ability to set priorities, produce accurate work, and meet stringent deadlines; ability to function independently in a setting with a wide variety of duties.
Ability to mange multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Excellent communication and presentation skills in both written and verbal, including the ability to produce clear and well-organized documentation.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products, most importantly with Excel.
Familiarity with process improvement.

Essential Responsibilities And Competencies:
Develop financial models that include strong documentation of assumptions and applied methodologies.
Work with organizational stakeholders in development of service lines and analytical dashboards.
Develop and present service line profitability reports in conjunction with strategic planning.
Where possible, standardize financial modeling practices and continuously enhance routine reporting for end-users to make informed decisions.
Responsible for maintaining the Financial Decision Support application structure. This includes implementing physical database objects, managing data, and utilizing application toolsets to transform data for end users to make business decisions.
Understands the dimensional and relational architecture of the Financial Decision Support application.
Research and cite evidence-based industry standards that would apply to specific project or line of business.
Able to read and understand the data models used to retrieve, map, and create financial decision support data at the patient, department, and practitioner levels.
Ability to design complex analyses of financial, clinical, physician and operations reports.
Create detailed statistical data using various applications. Understand the source, nature and use to further add to the architecture of the financial decision support applications.
Analyze and review financial data, variances, trends, and results on a consistent and routine basis.
Ability to draft concise written reports with recommendations to Director level management, as appropriate.
Ability to build and maintain models that include physician data modeling, patient encounter level modeling, service line management, and benchmarking.
Develop solutions that process and manipulate large amounts of data into information that can be used for sound business decisions.
Ability to generate financial and analytical reports which contribute to the overall proper stewardship of organizational resources and empower management to make decisions that improve patient care and ancillary services while being cost effective.
Assist Director of Budget and Financial Planning and other members of the department with special projects as assigned.
Maintain communication with the Director of Budget and Financial Planning.
Demonstrate interdepartmental communication and collaboration.
Demonstrate conformance to Valley Medical Center’s policies and procedures.
