Examples of Duties

  • Calibrates, programs, installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical, electronic, and pneumatic systems, including power distribution equipment, motors, motor controls, power supplies, instrumentation, alarms, telemetering equipment, HVAC systems, automatic sampling equipment, metering devices, computer hardware, and peripheral equipment.
  • Works with logic programs and develops PLC projects from start to completion. Reads and interprets ladder logic, function block diagrams, structured text, and sequential function charts. Performs PLC testing, commissioning, installation, wiring, conduit layout, enclosure installation, and panel assembly. Diagnoses and resolves PLC issues to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Designs and installs distributed control systems, including actuators, variable frequency drives, and instrumentation.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and designs low-voltage (<1000V) to medium-voltage (1000Vā€“100,000V) control and distribution equipment.
  • Configures, calibrates, repairs, and monitors telemetry devices, including antennas, lightning protection, and radio equipment. Conducts predictive maintenance and performs on-site repairs.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and calibrates electronic instruments such as pressure, flow, level, temperature, vibration, air monitoring, and analytical equipment. Designs and assembles panels, sets up complex control systems, and interprets or modifies engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, P&IDs, and loop diagrams. Works from detailed engineering plans to complete assigned tasks and projects.
  • Performs computer-related duties, including minor programming, logic or control modifications, and system updates.
  • Assists in training Electrician Instrumentation Technician Apprentices as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, principles, methods, materials, and tools used in electrical, solid-state electronic, and pneumatic instrument trades.
  • National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical safety protocols.
  • Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), GE Intelligent Platforms, iFix SCADA, Historian, GE Intelligent Platforms Machine Edition ladder logic programming, Allen Bradley RSLogix 500 ladder logic programming, and ABB software packages.
  • Control systems, including PLCs, DCUs, and relay logic.
  • P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control schematics.
  • Microsoft Office applications.

Skilled in:

  • Calibrating, programming, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical, electronic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Researching and diagnosing electrical issues, including troubleshooting alarms and logic errors.

Ability to:

  • Organize and coordinate work assignments efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Education, License, and Certification

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a four-year apprenticeship in a related field or an academic degree/trade school certification (or equivalent) in a relevant technology.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions

Work Environment

  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts, in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and around airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor elements.
  • Regular exposure to the risk of electrical shock.
  • Occasionally works with explosives, at heights, in extreme temperatures, or in vibrating environments.
  • Typically encounters loud noise levels in the workplace.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to stand, use hands for precise tasks, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and detect odors.
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, walk, or sit.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 10 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally, and over 100 pounds rarely.
  • Requires specific vision abilities, including close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
