  • Required Qualifications

    License Requirements

    Professional Counselor:

    • Must hold a Professional Counselor license in Texas.
    • If licensed as LPC-A (or equivalent), must obtain full independent licensure within one year.
    • If licensed in another state, must secure independent licensure in Texas within one year.

    Social Work:

    • Must hold a Clinical Social Worker license in Texas.
    • If licensed as a Master Social Worker (LMSW or equivalent), must obtain full independent licensure within one year.
    • If licensed in another state, must obtain licensure to practice independently in Texas within one year.

    Psychology:

    • Must be licensed as a Psychologist in Texas or be license-eligible within one year.
    • If licensed in another state, must obtain independent licensure in Texas within one year.

    Educational Requirements

    Professional Counseling:

    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work, or another qualifying field for Texas licensure.
    • Licensed as a Professional Counselor (or equivalent from another state). If licensed elsewhere, must obtain licensure in Texas within one year.

    Social Work:

    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work, or another qualifying field for Texas licensure.
    • Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker (or equivalent from another state). If licensed elsewhere, must obtain licensure in Texas within one year.

    Psychology:

    • Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a field approved by the Texas Board of Examiners of Psychology.
    • Licensed as a Psychologist (or equivalent from another state). If licensed elsewhere, must obtain licensure in Texas within one year.
    • One year of full-time, post-doctoral clinical experience in a university counseling center or a similar relevant clinical setting.

    Required Experience & Skills

    • Experience in a college/university counseling center or outpatient mental health setting.
    • Proven ability to provide crisis intervention, brief individual therapy, care coordination, and case management for college students or young adults.
    • Experience delivering culturally competent mental health care to diverse populations.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    Relevant education and experience may be considered as a substitute where appropriate.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Two years of experience in brief individual therapy within a university counseling center.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, integrating both a medical model and a developmental approach.
    • Expertise in one or more evidence-based treatment modalities, such as:
      • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
      • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
      • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
    • Specialized training or expertise in treating trauma and/or eating disorders.
    • Experience working with marginalized student populations or those who historically underutilize mental health services.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with campus personnel, including academic affairs professionals and student services providers.
    • Experience working within large systems and contributing effectively to a high-volume mental health services agency.
    • At least two years of independent licensure.
