Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Job Responsibilities & Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and Report: Observe residents, document changes in condition, and report needs to appropriate staff.
  • Respond to Calls: Answer call lights and alarms, ensuring timely assistance for residents.
  • Vital Signs & Documentation: Obtain and record weights, vital signs, and intake/output measurements.
  • Prioritize and Organize: Manage daily tasks efficiently within designated time frames.
  • Assist with Daily Living (ADLs): Support residents with bathing, skin care, toileting, grooming, dressing, and mobility while encouraging independence.
  • Meal Support: Assist with feeding and monitor dietary intake, including supplements.
  • Elimination Needs: Provide incontinence care and assist with toileting needs as necessary.
  • Mobility Assistance: Transfer, reposition, and move residents every 2-3 hours or as needed.
  • Activity Participation: Help residents transition to activities, dining areas, and communal spaces.
  • Maintain a Comfortable Environment: Ensure a neat, home-like, and relaxing atmosphere in resident units.
  • Admissions & Discharges: Assist with resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Physical Therapy Support: Aid residents in achieving passive and active range-of-motion (PROM/AROM) and ambulation goals.
  • Treatment Administration: Perform assigned treatments as directed.
  • Equipment & Safety: Operate medical equipment safely and follow proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
  • Stock & Sanitize: Maintain cleanliness and ensure supplies and equipment are readily available.
  • Communication & Coordination: Answer and direct phone calls professionally and efficiently.
  • Team Collaboration: Foster positive working relationships and contribute to the success of the unit.
  • Compliance & Professional Growth: Maintain NYS CNA certification and demonstrate a willingness to receive feedback for improvement.
  • Complete Assignments: Ensure tasks are completed on time and readily accept additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum one year of experience in long-term care preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • New York State (NYS) Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Required.
