Electrician – Brookhaven National Laboratory
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Under minimal supervision, the electrician will:
- Plan, install, maintain, repair, and operate electrical systems, equipment, and controls in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other directives.
- Perform electrical work on a variety of systems and facilities, including those outside of the Maintenance Division as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Experience: A total of 7 years of electrical experience through one of the following:
- 5-year apprenticeship + 2 years of hands-on experience
- Formal trade school training + 2 years of experience (7–9 years total)
- 9 years of experience without formal training
- Expertise in maintenance and installation of electrical systems up to 600 volts in large commercial or institutional settings.
- Electrical system inspections to identify hazards, defects, and ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Ability to inspect, maintain, and repair indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures (120V–277V).
- Testing and troubleshooting of electrical circuits and equipment using various test instruments.
- Proficiency in safe work practices, including:
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Fall protection
- Confined space entry
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Installation of electrical systems, including:
- Conduits, junction boxes, and electrical distribution hardware
- Fire alarm panels, security systems, motors, motor starters, and switchboards
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.
- Emergency response skills to address alarms or urgent electrical issues.
- Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
- Familiarity with NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace, 2015 Edition).
- Previous or current County Master Electrician License.
- NYS Fire/Security Alarm System Installer License.
Other Requirements
- Must meet the medical requirements outlined in the Job Assessment Form.
- Must have a working telephone and provide contact information for callouts and emergencies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to follow instructions, complete work orders, and document tasks accurately.
- Ability to effectively communicate with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Must complete the Job Training Assessment.
Environmental, Health & Safety Considerations
- Frequent standing, bending, and lifting (up to 30 lbs).
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Capable of climbing ladders and working at heights up to 30 feet.
- Use of respirators and other safety equipment.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures (both hot and cold environments).
- Use of powered and air-operated hand tools.
- Working with machinery such as benchtop grinders.
- Ability to work on scaffolds, aerial lifts, boom trucks, and man-lifts.
