Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure Compliance: Adhere to all federal, state, and district regulations regarding special education program development and implementation.
  • Maintain Records: Keep accurate, up-to-date student records and submit required reports within designated deadlines. Ensure all confidential special education documents comply with state and federal regulations.
  • Uphold Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student, parent, and staff information, disclosing only when professionally necessary or legally required.
  • Effective Communication: Demonstrate proficiency in written and verbal communication in English.
  • Administrative Duties: Complete clerical tasks such as attendance tracking, budgeting materials, and recording grades promptly and accurately.
  • Professional Development: Attend and actively participate in all required training sessions.
  • Support Staff Management: Oversee and assign tasks to paraprofessionals and additional student support staff as necessary.
  • Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate, timely student records in PowerSchool.

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Curriculum: Provide instruction in domestic, vocational, recreational, community, and functional academic areas.
  • Use Research-Based Methods: Implement evidence-based teaching materials and strategies such as general education curriculum, Edmark, TouchMath, FACTER, LCCE, and Syracuse programs.
  • Create Engaging Lessons: Plan and deliver meaningful, relevant, and developmentally appropriate instructional activities.
  • Integrate Natural Learning Environments: Conduct instruction in inclusive settings, including general education classrooms and community-based environments.
  • Differentiate Instruction: Utilize age-appropriate instructional materials, offer multi-level and differentiated instruction, and ensure clear lesson objectives are pre-planned.
  • Provide Standards-Based Education: Align instruction with state standards and use appropriate assessment tools, including state alternate assessments where applicable.
  • Adapt Teaching Methods: Implement instructional adaptations such as picture cues, cooperative learning, student grouping, sign language, and individualized schedules to enhance learning.
  • Support Functional Communication: Teach students functional communication skills and incorporate individualized communication tools (e.g., picture cards, voice output devices, consequence maps).
  • Manage Student Behavior: Develop and implement positive behavior supports and individualized behavior intervention plans aligned with student needs.
  • Monitor Student Progress: Regularly collect and analyze student performance data to adjust individual learning plans as needed, including annual IEP meetings or more frequent updates if necessary.
