Position Objective

As a key member of the Research and Engagement Services Team, the Student Success Librarian plays a vital role in leading the Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) in developing adaptable and inclusive instruction and engagement programming. This role supports a variety of audiences and learning environments, including both in-person and online settings.

The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in library instruction, outreach, and assessment to enhance student learning and academic success. They will actively collaborate on campus-wide student success initiatives and drive innovation in multi-modal instructional approaches. The Student Success Librarian should thrive in a collaborative team environment and demonstrate a commitment to inclusive and effective pedagogy. Additionally, this role serves as a member of the KSL Leadership Team.


Essential Functions

  • Strategic Decision-Making & Instructional Expertise (28%)

    • Provide leadership in library instruction and programming, implementing best practices and emerging technologies (e.g., AI literacy).
    • Deliver engaging information literacy sessions for diverse audiences, both in classrooms and outreach programs.
    • Advocate for student-centered teaching approaches and mentor colleagues in instructional innovation.
    • Develop instructional materials (e.g., LibGuides, instructional videos, Canvas modules) and contribute to library collection development.
    • Stay updated on trends in library instruction, assessment, and outreach while aligning KSL initiatives with academic community needs.
    • Apply expertise in organizational positioning, change management, and leadership.
  • Campus Collaboration & Student Success Initiatives (20%)

    • Partner on student success programs targeting first-year, first-generation, international, and transfer students.
    • Develop and lead student orientation programming.
    • Serve as a liaison to campus support offices such as Undergraduate Advising, Student Government Association, and EXPLORE (first-year experience).
    • Foster inclusive campus engagement and create a welcoming community for all students.
  • Workshops & Outreach (14%)

    • Conduct workshops on digital, data, AI, and information literacy.
    • Implement outreach initiatives to promote library programs, resources, and services across multiple platforms.
  • Leadership & Strategic Development (9%)

    • Serve on the KSL Leadership Team, contributing expertise to KSL strategic initiatives.
    • Chair the KSL Instruction Committee, developing best practices and assessment standards.
    • Foster collaboration among library instructors to integrate information and digital literacy initiatives.
  • Assessment & Data Analysis (9%)

    • Evaluate classroom instruction, workshops, and asynchronous learning materials.
    • Collect and analyze student learning outcomes and instructional effectiveness data.
    • Collaborate on assessment projects to improve student programming.
  • Research Support (6%)

    • Provide research assistance through on-call services, consultations, and virtual chat support.
  • Professional Contributions & Service (6%)

    • Engage in professional scholarship, research, and service at state, regional, national, or international levels.
  • Diversity & Inclusion (6%)

    • Contribute to fostering a culture of inclusivity, civility, and belonging.

    • Qualifications

      Experience

      The initial rank of the Research and Engagement Librarian will be determined based on the individual’s professional expertise, skills, and contributions. Key considerations include:

      • Depth of professional knowledge and abilities.
      • Contributions to the library profession through scholarship and service.
      • Demonstration of qualities and values aligned with the university and library mission.

      Education and Experience

      • Master’s degree in Library Science or a related field.
      • Six years of relevant experience may be required or preferred.
      • A second advanced degree may be required or preferred, depending on the role.
