Healthcare Interpreter – Job Overview
The Healthcare Interpreter plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services by facilitating clear and accurate communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and healthcare providers. This position requires proficiency in oral interpretation and basic written translation, while also serving as a cultural intermediary to enhance patient understanding and improve clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
✅ Provide Language Support
- Offer in-person, telephone, and video interpretation services.
- Assist with basic translation of healthcare-related documents.
✅ Utilize Technology for Interpretation
- Employ various interpreting modalities to meet patient needs.
- Troubleshoot minor technical issues with interpretation software.
✅ Facilitate Effective Communication
- Interpret medical discussions, including appointments, procedures, discharge instructions, emergency encounters, and patient education.
- Ensure accuracy while considering cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions.
✅ Serve as a Cultural Mediator
- Educate healthcare professionals about cultural factors affecting patient interactions.
- Advocate for culturally competent care to enhance patient experience.
✅ Uphold Professional & Ethical Standards
- Comply with healthcare system policies and national interpreting standards.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical practices.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, lift, and reach as required.
- Must be able to lift at least 10 pounds to shoulder height.
- Requires clear speech, hearing, and vision for effective communication.
- Must be able to provide interpretation in-person, via phone, or video.
Qualifications & Experience
🎓 Education:
- High school diploma required (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
💼 Experience:
- At least 1 year of relevant interpreting experience.
- Prior experience in a healthcare setting is required.
🩺 Skills & Certifications:
- Strong medical terminology knowledge.
- National medical interpreter certification preferred.
- Successful completion of an Interpreter Language Assessment required.
- Must complete a 40-hour Medical Interpretation Training Program within one year of hire.
