Essential Job Functions

As a Driver Trainee, you will train alongside a Driver Trainer to develop the skills needed for successful tractor-trailer operation and customer deliveries. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Vehicle Maneuvering & Attachment: Properly positioning the tractor to attach the trailer and securing it with appropriate handling lines.
  • Safe Driving Practices: Operating the truck in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations as well as company policies.
  • Pre- & Post-Trip Inspections: Conducting thorough inspections of the tractor-trailer before and after trips and submitting DOT inspection reports detailing vehicle condition.
  • Delivery Documentation: Using the Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH) device to record delivery receipts, product temperatures, and any exceptions. Ensuring the trailer is secure for safe and undamaged product transport.
  • On-the-Road Training: Riding with an experienced Driver Trainer to learn commercial driving regulations and gain firsthand experience in starting, maneuvering, turning, backing, parking, and handling the vehicle at customer sites.
  • Driver Log Maintenance: Keeping an accurate and compliant log (manual or PeopleNet) per DOT regulations, including delivery receipts and product temperatures.
  • Unloading & Delivering Products: Assisting in unloading the trailer and delivering products directly to customer locations.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates must:

  • Preferably have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Meet the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy eligibility requirements.
  • Complete CDL Class A training within six months.
  • Be willing and able to load, unload, and deliver all products ordered by McLane customers.
  • Physically perform essential job functions, including standing, walking, sitting, climbing, reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping.
  • Read and comprehend labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
  • Perform basic math calculations to verify product quantities.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, management, and fellow teammates.
  • Safely operate a tractor-trailer, a two-wheeled dolly, ramps, and onboard PeopleNet devices.

Working Conditions

  • Work environments include distribution centers, transportation departments, shops, and customer locations.
  • Conditions may involve moderate noise, vehicle vibration, and exposure to extreme weather depending on the climate.
  • Frequent travel, including overnight stays, is required.
