Responsibilities

Job Summary:

As a Surgical Technician/Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering comprehensive patient care and support within a clinical and surgical setting. Your duties will include escorting patients, gathering essential medical information, preparing procedure rooms, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring compliance with company policies and HIPAA regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam and procedure rooms, assisting them as needed.
  • Collect patient history, record vital signs, and perform screenings following provider guidelines.
  • Prepare and organize patient documentation for the visit, ensuring accurate entry into the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Conduct pre-operative intake through a one-on-one consultation, explain surgical procedures, and address patient questions within your scope.
  • Set up procedure rooms and surgical trays with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations and company policies.
  • Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis.
  • Assist the physician during procedures by passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, and providing necessary support.
  • Apply bandages to surgical sites, prepare discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients, and address any concerns.
  • Clean and prepare surgical instruments for terminal sterilization using an autoclave.
  • Collect, process, and accurately handle lab specimens, ensuring proper routing to the correct laboratory based on patient insurance. Maintain an accurate pathology log.
  • Remove sutures and notify patients of pathology and lab results.
  • Respond to patient inquiries both in person and over the phone, following provider instructions.
  • Schedule and reschedule appointments with providers and specialists, coordinating the transfer of necessary medical records.
  • Manage medication samples, properly dispose of expired supplies, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure infection control procedures are followed, maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets fully stocked.
  • Document all medical instructions provided to patients.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • A minimum of one year of recent experience as a Surgical Assistant, Medical Assistant, LPN, or other clinically based patient care role is highly preferred.
