The Role

Documented is seeking an experienced Haitian Creole translator and news editor to join our innovative, award-winning nonprofit newsroom in New York City. Our mission is to provide in-depth coverage of immigrant communities, and we are looking for a detail-oriented professional with a strong journalism background.

The ideal candidate is fluent in both Haitian Creole and English (written and spoken), has news editing experience, and is well-versed in journalistic standards and AP style. They should be able to deliver accurate, high-quality translations under tight deadlines and have experience working with digital publications (a plus). Responsibilities

  • Translate and edit 4-8 news stories per month from English to Haitian Creole, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and journalistic integrity.
  • Maintain the tone and style of the publication in all translations.
  • Proofread and fact-check translated content for accuracy and consistency.
  • Deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines with next-day turnaround on assigned stories.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Haitian Creole and English (written and spoken).
  • Experience editing news copy with strong attention to detail.
  • Thorough understanding of journalistic standards and AP style.
  • Experience with digital publications (preferred but not required).
