Essential Functions

  • Upholds and integrates Trinity Health’s Mission, Vision, and Values into daily behaviors, practices, and decision-making.
  • Supports the revenue cycle process by handling billing and follow-up tasks for an assigned PBS location.
  • Accurately documents billing activities, including claims billed, payments received, settlements, and follow-up actions in the appropriate system(s).
  • Identifies and escalates issues that impact billing accuracy and follow-up efficiency.
  • Engages in proactive collection efforts, including direct contact with payers to secure payments and timely responses to mail correspondence.
  • Coordinates with hospital departments to resolve billing discrepancies and collect necessary demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance details.
  • Conducts routine follow-up investigations on overpayments, underpayments, credit balances, and payment delays, routing tasks appropriately to maximize reimbursement and ensure timely and accurate claim resolution.
  • Researches claim rejections, makes necessary corrections, takes corrective actions, or escalates claims as needed.
  • Proactively follows up on delayed payments, contacting both patients and third-party payers to determine causes of delay and provide additional required information.
  • May prepare special reports at the direction of the Billing and Follow-Up Supervisor, tracking key performance indicators such as claim volume, dollars billed, edits made, and unresolved claims.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as Trinity Health’s Integrity and Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and internal policies to ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:

    • High school diploma required.
    • Successful completion of the Trinity Health Trainee Program with demonstrated achievement in productivity and quality standards OR one (1) year of experience in revenue cycle functions in a hospital, clinic, health insurance company, managed care organization, or healthcare financial service setting.
    • Experience in medical claims processing, financial counseling, financial clearance, accounting, or customer service is preferred.
    • Prior experience in a complex, multi-site healthcare environment is a plus.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
    • Completion of regulatory/mandatory certifications and skills validation competencies is preferred.
  • Communication & Organizational Abilities:

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Effective interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
