Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Participation in ongoing early childhood staff development is mandatory.
  • Preferred: At least two years of experience in an early childhood setting.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Curriculum & Child Development

  • Assist in developing and implementing an age-appropriate, well-rounded curriculum for the classroom.
  • Ensure the curriculum aligns with DCYF licensing regulations, Bright Stars Quality Rating Standards, Rhode Island’s Comprehensive Birth to Five Early Learning and Development Standards, and YMCA guidelines to meet the needs of each child.
  • Work with the lead teacher to prepare lesson plans following the Creative Curriculum framework, incorporating both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of children’s progress, document findings, and present them to the teacher.
  • Regularly collaborate with the teacher to ensure accurate documentation of children’s development.

Health & Safety

  • Integrate Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards into daily routines using the Food and Fun Curriculum while serving as a positive role model.
  • Establish and maintain learning centers within the classroom following ITERS and ECERS Environmental Rating Scale guidelines.
  • Ensure proper sign-in and sign-out procedures are followed per DCYF Licensing Regulations.
  • Conduct daily health checks, maintain accurate documentation, and report incidents as necessary.
  • Maintain attendance and meal reports for compliance and record-keeping.
  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures, providing rescue and first aid when needed.
  • Promote a safe and risk-free environment, ensuring unsafe conditions or practices are promptly addressed.

Family & Staff Communication

  • Work with the teacher to provide daily (infants/toddlers) or weekly (preschool) written communication with families.
  • Maintain positive relationships with families through active listening, engagement, and support.
  • Greet families by name, engage in meaningful conversations, and create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Model professionalism, caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions.
  • Use Listen First communication techniques with both staff and families to foster a collaborative environment.

Professionalism & Growth

  • Report to work on time and prepared to engage with children.
  • Attend all staff meetings, trainings, and professional development programs as required.
  • Maintain all certifications and credentials necessary for the role.
  • Participate in continuous learning opportunities, including training programs, courses, and professional development workshops.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and members to promote teamwork and a positive community atmosphere.
