What’s the Role?

We’re seeking an experienced Accessibility Engineer to join our evolving Accessibility & Design System team. As a Staff Software Engineer in the User Experience Foundation, you will be responsible for writing frontend components, designing architecture, and creating documentation that enhances and expands Accessibility at Etsy and within our Design System. If you’re passionate about writing high-quality frontend code and enjoy helping other engineers improve their skills and efficiency, this could be the ideal role for you.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Performance and Accessibility Experience. We’re open to considering candidates based in the United States. Those within commuting distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or the San Francisco Bay Area may receive priority consideration. For those in commuting range, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week, depending on location. What’s the Team Like at Etsy?

The User Experience Foundation team is responsible for the systems, guides, and components that shape Etsy’s customer experience. Our product teams use Etsy’s established Design System, “Collage,” to consistently create beautiful, engaging, inclusive, and accessible products for Etsy’s Buyers and Sellers.

You will work closely with leadership in Design, Product, and Engineering across all platforms to develop and refine our growing suite of systems. Your contributions will have a broad impact, touching all Etsy product teams and every step of the customer journey.

What Will Your Day-to-Day Look Like?

  • Serve as an advocate for Design Systems, Frontend, and Accessibility at Etsy.
  • Create and maintain reusable components that are used by various product teams across Etsy.
  • Lead and contribute to projects, such as building Accessibility linters, improving metrics, or reworking complex components.
  • Provide support for your peers, including writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering questions on Slack, auditing new features, and hosting office hours or training sessions.
  • Identify areas of technical debt and propose solutions to move Accessibility initiatives forward.

Qualities That Will Help You Succeed in This Role:

  • Deep expertise in Accessibility and usability best practices, including WCAG, WAI-ARIA, and Section 508 standards.
  • Strong experience testing with assistive technologies like keyboard-only navigation, screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack), as well as screen magnification and speech recognition software.
  • Proficiency in auditing features with automated tools (e.g., Lighthouse, WAVE, Axe).
  • Experience reviewing designs for accessibility compliance.
  • Advanced skills in writing frontend code, including JavaScript, CSS, TypeScript, React, Storybook, and familiarity with legacy frameworks.
  • Ability to take a strong stance on Frontend Architecture and Design Systems, while remaining open to evolving ideas and feedback.
  • A passion for mentoring junior engineers and fostering their growth.
  • Experience planning, leading, and completing projects.
  • A growth mindset, welcoming feedback and new learning opportunities.
  • Strong ownership of your work, with a desire to understand the “why” behind your contributions.
